How do I delete Claude Code's settings and history?

Delete the .claude folder and the .claude.json file in your home folder, then the .claude folder and .mcp.json file in each project you used it in. This erases your settings, allowed tools, MCP servers and session history, so copy anything you want to keep first.

Your settings and history · macOS, Linux and WSL
rm -rf ~/.claude
rm ~/.claude.json
Your settings and history · Windows PowerShell
Remove-Item -Path "$env:USERPROFILE\.claude" -Recurse -Force
Remove-Item -Path "$env:USERPROFILE\.claude.json" -Force
One project's settings (run inside the project folder) · macOS, Linux and WSL
rm -rf .claude
rm -f .mcp.json
One project's settings (run inside the project folder) · Windows PowerShell
Remove-Item -Path ".claude" -Recurse -Force
Remove-Item -Path ".mcp.json" -Force

Why does Claude Code still run after I uninstalled it?

You most likely have a second copy, for example one from npm and one from the install script, or an old shell alias. Find where it lives with the command below, then remove that copy the way it was installed.

macOS, Linux and WSL: where is it?
which -a claude
Windows: where is it?
where.exe claude

Will the VS Code extension or the desktop app bring it back?

They can: the VS Code extension, the JetBrains plugin and the Claude desktop app all write to the same ~/.claude folder, so it comes back the next time one of them runs. Uninstall them first if you want Claude Code gone for good.

Does uninstalling Claude Code cancel my Claude subscription?

No. Your Claude plan is billed by Anthropic and keeps renewing until you cancel it in your account settings on claude.ai.

Coming back later? Reinstalling is one line.
