Give Cowork a memory
5 min read·Lesson 3 of Workspace and memory
Picture a brilliant new hire on their first day. Sharp, capable, ready to go — and they know absolutely nothing about you. Not your role, not your preferences, not how you like the weekly report formatted. Every fresh Cowork session starts exactly there. Memory is how you teach it, so day two isn't day one all over again.
Project memory is a plain file called memory.md that lives inside the Project's folder. Claude reads it at the start of your work and updates it as things change. It's project-scoped — what you teach one Project doesn't leak into another — and it's just a file, so you can open it and edit it yourself anytime.
