By the end of this lesson you will have one number written down plainly: either the category that is larger than you thought, or the gap between what came in and what went out. Named, with its arithmetic, and with no lecture attached.
Most people already half know their uncomfortable number. They know its shape and avoid confirming it, because confirmation feels like it will arrive with a verdict.
It does not have to. A number is a measurement. The reason to name it is that an unnamed number cannot be planned around, and it goes on making decisions on your behalf.
There are only two shapes it takes.
A category bigger than you thought. Usually made of many small lines rather than one large one, which is exactly why it stayed invisible.
A gap between money in and money out. The month ended with less than it started, and now you know by how much.
What this course cannot do
Worth saying before you run the prompt, because it is the honest part. If your income is smaller than what you have to spend, no categorisation closes that gap. Nothing in this course, and no prompt anywhere, makes rent cheaper or a wage larger. Pretending otherwise would be a lie.
Naming the number is still worth doing. It turns a vague dread into a figure with a size. It tells you whether you are short by a little every month or by a lot once. It gives you something specific to take to someone who can actually help. And where the month was fine, it stops that month being committed away before it arrives.
This is educational, not financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and the prompt is written to keep it that way.
